Publication guidelines

All original articles should be a maximum of 6,000 words in length (including title, abstract, references, figures, tables, appendices, and supplementary materials). Abstracts and abstracts should be presented in a structured form with the sections explicitly written. This means that articles should have the following sections: Introduction/Objective (a brief description of the origin and aim of the study, Methods (a detailed description of the participants, instruments and procedure), Results (a description of the main findings) and Conclusions (describing the implications of the study). Review papers will be held to this same standard, however, the editorial board will be flexible in revisions based on content. Times New Roman 12 will be the font and size to be used in the texts. All content (except if tables are considered) should be double-spaced. The margins should be 2.44 cm on each side and the page number should be placed in the upper right corner.

The first page of the document or cover page (author note) should be sent separately from the rest of the manuscript. It should include the title in Spanish or Portuguese and in English, as well as the names of the authors, their ORCID identifier if possible, and their institutional affiliation. This should be followed by four paragraphs presenting: (1) the complete institutional affiliation, (2) changes to it if necessary, (3) acknowledgements and specific situations, and (4) contact person.

The main document should not include author information, it should begin with the title in two languages (Spanish or Portuguese and English) followed by the abstract and the summary (maximum 250 words each).

For papers submitted in 2020, only the strict APA 6th ed. standards will be accepted. In 2021, both the 6th and 7th ed. standards will be accepted. From 2022 onwards, papers will only be accepted in APA standards in their 7th edition. This includes writing style, sections and subsections, tables and figures, and bibliographical references. All tables and figures should be submitted in vector graphic format (Word and Excel usually provide this option under the name enhanced metafile or similar) which is intended to ensure that the figures in the final article are of high quality and are not pixelated.

It is also necessary to present between 5 and 8 keywords, each of which should have less than 4 words. Authors are suggested to consult the keywords in the Thesaurus of their field of knowledge or to verify which words any researcher would use to locate their article in a search engine. Novel words that are not frequently and widely used by the academic community should not be used. On the other hand, it is necessary for authors to use respectful language in their articles and to reduce discrimination concerning the groups that were the object of their study.

To unify the APA norms with the Anglo-Saxon style, the & symbol will be used both in text references in parentheses and in bibliographic references. Besides, the inclusion of the DOI in references where this is possible is mandatory and not just a suggestion. Finally, the references must be current and show that the most recent and relevant scientific findings on the subject of the article have been consulted.

Any failure to comply with one or more of the criteria presented in these Publication Guidelines may result in the rejection of an article at any stage of the editorial process.

Editorial process

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through the Scholar One Manuscripts platform at, where the necessary information for submission can be found. The use of this resource allows us to follow the status of the manuscript through the web page.

Once the article is submitted through this platform, the author will receive a notification of receipt. Within 20 days the editorial committee will decide whether the article will be reviewed or not considered for publication. If the article is considered relevant for publication, within approximately six months the status of the article will be reported in one of the following labels: Accepted, Accepted with minor changes, Accepted with major changes or Rejected. This decision will be informed by the opinions of at least two anonymous peers, experts in the field. Regardless of the peer reviewers’ opinion, the final decision on whether or not to include the article in the Revista Latinoamericana de Psicología will be made by the editorial committee, which will evaluate the final quality of the article. Once the judgment on the acceptance of the article has been issued, the authors will have 30 days to make the changes. This period may be extended with prior written notification to the editorial committee. Also, during the editing of the article in the final phase of publication, the authors should review the style correction to be made to the article and the final proofs of the article in PDF. These two revisions are intended to improve the quality of the article and eliminate any typos or undesirable aspects before publication. If necessary, the journal reserves the right to introduce stylistic or formatting modifications to increase the quality of the final article. After the article is published it will not be possible to make any modifications. As soon as the article is published, a PDF copy of the article will be sent to the authors and will be included in the official web page of the journal at


The articles of the Revista Latinoamericana de Psicología will be published under a Creative Commons license (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivativeWorks 4.0 International) (associate the license to this link: which allows the free diffusion of the work, without alterations to the final version, attributing the credit to the original authors (through the corresponding citations) and without commercial purposes.  This implies the free circulation of the work without adulteration and economic benefits.

To maintain this policy of free access to the work, the Revista Latinoamericana de Psicología will charge USD 300 after the article is accepted for publication. The payment of this money is a necessary condition for the editorial team to begin the final editing of the article.

Editorial Ethics

The Revista Latinoamericana de Psicología will not publish papers that have been written without the necessary permissions or that have been illegally collected. All articles must include a paragraph about following the ethical guidelines incorporated at the end of the procedure. Failure to comply with any of these criteria will be grounds for rejection of the article at any stage of the editorial process.

Papers submitted to the journal must comply with international ethical standards (American Psychological Association – APA  and the Declaration of Helsinki Besides, they should comply with national and international legislation according to the type of research, and the authors must specify such compliance in the manuscript. It is also important that at the time of submitting the article, any type of conflict of interest that the authors may have with the submission and/or subsequent eventual publication of the article is mentioned.  The Revista Latinoamericana de Psicología safeguards intellectual property rights and good scientific and editorial practices. For this reason, strict compliance with citation standards is reviewed through different strategies to ensure the originality of the manuscripts.
